What is a Flotilla?

A sailing flotilla is where adventure meets community… a floating village of boats exploring an area together 🌍⛵. Instead of sailing solo, a group of yachts follows a shared route, guided by a lead crew who handles the tricky bits so you can focus on the magic.

It starts with LIVE 🌅 — waking up to sunrises over turquoise bays, diving into crystal water, and actually living the life most people only daydream about. Then comes LEARN 📚 — whether you’re trimming sails, plotting courses, or finally figuring out what all those ropes do, you gain real skills with hands-on guidance.

But flotillas aren’t just about sailing… they’re about people. You SHARE 🤝 stories, meals, and belly laughs across cockpits under starlit skies. You GIVE 💛 too — from helping a neighboring crew dock, to leaving places better than you found them.

And the ocean? That’s sacred ground. You PROTECT 🌊 by sailing responsibly, reducing waste, and respecting marine life. It’s not just travel — it’s stewardship.

Along the way, something shifts. Confidence builds. Comfort zones stretch. You GROW 🌱 in ways that stick long after you’re back on land.

Then there’s the secret ingredient… TRIBE. By the end, strangers have become your people — your crew, your co-conspirators in adventure.

As for cost, a typical Gnomad Sailing flotilla runs about $3,000 per couple, plus shared food 🍝, drinks 🍹, and travel ✈️. Split across a week of unforgettable experiences, it’s a surprisingly accessible way to live the sailing dream.

A flotilla isn’t just a trip. It’s a living, breathing experience shaped by connection, courage, and a salty breeze that somehow rewires your soul.

(And yes… it pairs perfectly with a cold drink at anchor 🍹)

Let's talk about Med-Mooring

Mediterranean mooring… the dockside dance that turns heads and tests nerves 😎⛵. It’s the classic Med move: stern-to the dock, anchor out front, lines tight, and café spectators judging your every move ☕👀.

Here’s how to nail it:

First, prep like a pro. Set your fenders along both sides, prepare dock stern lines on cleats, and make sure your anchor is ready to drop. Assign roles. One person on the helm, one on the anchor, two ready to either leap ashore like salty ninjas or throw the stern lines to dock hands.

Next, line up your approach 🎯. Head toward the dock slowly, into the wind if possible. When you’re about 3–4 boat lengths out, drop the anchor ⚓ and begin reversing. Keep it straight. Tiny corrections. No panic zig-zags.

As you glide back, pay out anchor chain steadily, keeping it taught ⛓️. Too little and you’ll drift. Too much and you’ll visit your neighbor’s swim platform uninvited.

Now the moment… stern to the dock 🚤. Aim to stop about a foot away. Crew hops off, secures stern lines to cleats. Keep the engine in gentle reverse to hold position while lines are made fast.

Finally, set the anchor 💪. Once stern lines are secure, ease forward slightly and tension the chain, then snug everything up. You want a firm triangle: boat, dock, anchor. And yes… sometimes anchor chains overlap like spaghetti in a storm 🍝⛓️, turning departure into a slow-motion puzzle of polite negotiation, boat hooks, and shared laughs.

Occasionally we will med-moor in a bay, at which point we run the stern lines out by dinghy and tie them off on rocks.

Bonus tip: stay cool 😎. Even if it’s messy, act like it’s intentional. Confidence is half the maneuver. Do it right, and you’ll look like a Mediterranean marina legend 🌅🍷. Do it wrong… well, at least it’s entertaining.

Amalfi Coast Flotilla

May 16 thru 23

About 14 of us are heading out next week to the sun-soaked cliffs, sparkling cobalt water, and a fleet of adventure-hungry sailors… this Amalfi flotilla is officially underway 🌞⛵🇮🇹.

Over the coming days, we’ll island-hop from volcanic hideaways to iconic gems like Capri and Positano, dropping anchor in turquoise bays by day and tying up dockside for limoncello-fueled nights 🍋🍹. Expect morning swims straight off the stern, long lazy lunches, and golden hour sails that feel almost unreal 🎨🌅.

Each day, we’ll sail a few easy hours, arriving somewhere new… a buzzing marina, a quiet cove, or a cliffside village that begs to be explored. Along the way, we’ll be building skills at the helm, dialing in maneuvers, and gaining confidence as a crew ⚓💪.

And as always, the magic happens between the lines… where laughter lingers, stories grow, and this group becomes a true TRIBE 🧭.

Amalfi isn’t just the backdrop… it’s the stage. And we’re about to put on one hell of a show 🌊✨ Follow our adventures on Instagram @Gnomadsailing.
